What Is the Triple Entente?
The Triple Entente consists of three of the most powerful countries of the era of World War 1: Great Britain, France, and Russia. While the three countries received assistance from countries like the United States and Japan after formation, they initially led a strong alliance that helped to even out the weight of the world alliance that was formed by Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Germany.
The new alliance marked a clear change in Russian foreign policy, as the Russians had initially been in an alliance with both Germany and Austria-Hungary. The alliance eventually ended in the late 1800s, leaving Russia without a major alliance partner. It quickly aligned with France in 1892 to ensure that it had an ally. The United Kingdom joined the alliance when it became worried about the Germans and the stance the German government began to take around 1907.
World War 1
The Triple Entente remained strong during World War 1, as the general fears that the three major countries had about Germany and the Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy alliance that had formed came to life. While Italy was considered an ally in the war, France, the UK, and Russia led the powers that eventually toppled the Germans and Austro-Hungarians. Both Germany and Austria-Hungary began to invade, with Austria-Hungary invading Serbia and the Germans attempting to invade, among other locations, France. Russia joined in and attacked the Germans because of the alliance that had formed.
The Triple Entente eventually led the world to defeat the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary, albeit at a significant cost. Russia failed to finish out the war, as the government collapsed in a revolution that was based on the way the war was handled. The entente was broken once the Russians signed the peace treaty with the Germans.
It is important to recognize that the Triple Entente is just one of the many different alliances that hard formed before World War 1 and around the same time period as the war.
